Facial Hair Transplants Gaining Popularity in Michigan?

The bearded look is back in style and you can see men in there 20’s to men in there 50s rocking this classic style. As facial hair becomes more accepted in the professional world we want to give you a quick look into the world of facial hair transplants. How they work, how common they are, etc.

In this article we interview Kevin; a 32-year-old guy in Ann Arbor, Michigan who has recently had hair transplanted to thicken his facial hair area, along with Dr. Henderson, an experienced hair transplantation surgeon.

Kevin wanted to have thick and full goatee yet, no matter how long he waited, he never experienced much beard growth. “I wanted a more distinguished and unique look to myself. In fact, what I really wanted was to grow a full beard.” (Kevin)

Dr. Henderson claims that he has actually seen a great number of young men interested in a beard transplant Michigan lately. According to the doctor, hair is taken from same sites as a traditional hair transplant (the back and sides of the scalp) and inserted one follicle at a time on the face where the hair is lacking in volume. A facial hair transplant procedure can take anywhere from a few hours to an entire day out of someone’s schedule depending on the number of follicles that are transplanted.

The techniques used such as follicular unit extraction and such are the same with a facial hair transplant as with those used to treat general Androgenic Alopecia, resulting in similar success rates and costs per grafts. The procedure also closely resembles a traditional hair transplant in regards to patient comfort and recovery time.

Kevin says that after his successful facial hair transplant procedure his facial hair “feels so much fuller, thicker, and natural-looking. Its everything I was hoping for out of the procedure and I am really ecstatic about my results.”

Dr. Henderson claims that facial hair transplants are becoming super popular in modern and hip cities such as Ann Arbor, and those in California and New York. He says that beard transplants can be used for much more than men looking to get that lumberjack look. Rather, beard transplants have been used for religious reasons, to cover facial scars, and even to create a more masculine look for transgender individuals. Dr. Henderson says that he has also performed hair transplants for eyebrows and eyelashes in Michigan.

“It makes no difference what gender they are, what their sexual orientation happens to be, what their hair color is, what their skin color is, or any other factor like that.” Says Dr. Henderson, “A facial hair transplant or body hair transplant procedure can be done for anyone who wants more facial hair, plain and simple.”

How Does a Beard Transplant Work?

As we mentioned earlier, a beard transplant works very similarly to a traditional hair transplant. During a conventional Michigan hair transplant procedure, the surgeon takes hair from a “donor site” and transplant it to a “recipient site” using a modern technique known as follicular unit extraction, or FUE for short. In a traditional hair transplant, the donor site is often the back and sides of the head as the hairs there tend to be genetically resistant against balding. Other options such as the back, arms, and chest are less common but still viable options.

During a facial hair transplant, the donor site is often the same as if a patient would be getting a traditional scalp treatment although the recipient site is obviously the facial hair region. The facial hair region, just like the front and top of the scalp will immediately begin to drive nutrients to the newly implanted beard hairs and within months they will be thick, strong, and indistinguishable from the natural beard hairs among them.

Transplanting Beard Hair to The Scalp

Let’s take a break and look at what happens when you turn the tables and use beard hair to restore hair loss on the scalp. The study we are looking at investigates transplanting beard hair on the scalp and follows 35 male subjects for 3 consecutive years who have been suffering from androgenic alopecia, also known as male pattern baldness.

In the study, Michigan hair transplant surgeons attempt to take hair from the beard region and other areas of the body such as the arms, legs, and chest, and transplant them to the front and sides of the scalps to treat male pattern baldness. The method they are using is the Follicular Unit Extraction technique which consists of extracting hair follicles in groupings of 1 to 4 in a randomized pattern and pacing them one by one in the recipient site (in this case, the scalp).

The study noticed that the highest success rates were seen in patients who had a mixture of scalp, beard and body hair transplanted on to the scalp. The mix made it significantly more likely for the patient’s body to accept the transplanted hair and begin driving nutrients to the follicles. Follow-up visits occurred regularly for over 2 years after the procedure and the results indicated no change in the hair color, curl pattern, or overall caliber of the newly inserted hair follicles, matching the appearance of the hairs in the donor locations.
