The Single Biggest Factor In A Successful Mommy Makeover

The Single Biggest Factor In A Successful Mommy Makeover

A mommy makeover is one of the most life-changing and sought after procedures in the realm of cosmetic surgery. Although the Mommy Makeover is not a specific procedure, we treat it like one. It takes a very rare combination of surgical skill and experience to perform properly and in this article, we want to explain why your surgeon is the single most important factor in having a successful mommy makeover in Michigan

What types of body contouring can a mommy makeover include?

A mommy makeover is a common term used to describe a single surgery involving multiple treatments at once. The goal of a mommy makeover and rationale for the name is to restore a woman’s body to its pre-pregnancy physique. Pregnancy takes a heavy toll on a woman’s body and those who have had multiple children often experience irreversible changes to their body. In addition, every woman’s body reacts to pregnancy in a different way, so for this reason, every mommy makeover is a 100% unique and customized treatment.

A mommy makeover surgery typically consists of a body contouring treatment along with a breast enhancement of some sort. The most common body contouring procedure used is a tummy tuck, as most mothers find a lot of benefit in it. During pregnancy, the abdominal muscles are stretched. During rough pregnancies (multiple pregnancies often do this as well), the muscles of the abdominal wall are often stretched so severely that they become permanently separated. Once the abdominal muscles are separated they cannot be restored with diet or exercise. This is the reason why many women can get back into shape after pregnancy but can never regain the flat and hard stomach they had in their youth. It is not fat holding them back, but rather torn abdominals. Once the abdominal muscles are stitched back together during a tummy tuck, they can begin to see results again from their efforts in the gym.

Liposuction is commonly used to contour the body during a mommy makeover as well. When women become pregnant, their hormones change drastically. Among the many things that these hormonal changes cause (which we will not go into detail with), it often results in deposits of dangerous visceral fat around the midsection and sometimes other areas of the body. Visceral fat deposits are incredibly difficult to lose with diet and exercise alone and multiple studies show a direct correlation between visceral fat levels in the body and risk of heart disease, among other things. For this reason, your surgeon will likely recommend including liposuction in your mommy makeover.

What types of breast enhancements can a mommy makeover include?

What types of breast enhancements can a mommy makeover include?

In addition to body contouring, a mommy makeover almost always includes a breast enhancement of some sort. There are multiple treatments which can be used to enhance the breasts, and the choice of treatment depends on how motherhood has affected your breasts. For those whose breasts have lost their volume and youthful nature, breast implants are typically the treatment of choice. Breast augmentation with implants is a safe and effective procedure for improving the size and outward projection (perkiness) of the breasts without significant scarring.

Many women do not lose a lot of breast volume after their pregnancy, but their breasts become saggy and droopy, making them look less youthful. If your breasts have become droopy and you often wear a pushup bra just to look healthy, then a mastopexy, also known as a breast lift will likely be performed during your mommy makeover. During a breast lift, your plastic surgeon will create a circular incision around your areola (the dark region around the nipple) in order to minimize the visibility of scarring. Another lateral incision may be created down the center of the breast creating a lollipop shape, as it is referred to as, depending on your needs. The goal of a breast lift is to remove excess skin in order to raise the breasts and deliver a healthier and more youthful appearance.

A mommy makeover can also involve a breast reduction if a woman’s breasts have gained a significant amount of volume after pregnancy, in addition to droopiness. Heavy breasts can cause numerous problems for women including back pain, poor posture, and bra strap grooving. A breast reduction will significantly reduce the burden of heavy breasts on the body while at the same time, providing a more youthful and healthy appearance. A breast reduction is executed very similarly to a breast lift except for that fat and glandular tissue is often removed in addition to excess skin. During a breast reduction, the nipple and areola are often raised as well in order for the breasts to appear natural and unadulterated after healing.

Why does the surgeon I choose matter?

The surgeon who performs your mommy makeover is the most critical factor in the success of your procedure. As you can tell from the number of different treatments that a mommy makeover can involve, it takes an extremely rare combination of surgical skill and experience to perform properly. Most surgeons have anywhere from 1 to 3 procedures which they specialize in. In addition, most good surgeons prefer to focus their practice on one area of the body such the breasts, or the face.

If you are having a mommy makeover, your surgeon needs to be heavily experienced in a number of different breast and body procedures in order to deliver the results you are looking for. Because of this, there are very few plastic surgeons in Michigan whom we feel comfortable sending patients to when they are looking for a mommy makeover. When we look for a mommy makeover specialist to send patients to, we do so with excessive caution. If your plastic surgeon does not have years of experience and training in each one of the individual treatments that will be performed, you may not be happy with your results. For this reason, your mommy makeover may even involve multiple surgeons, one breast specialist, and one body contouring specialist, if deemed necessary.

If you are looking for the right plastic surgeon to help you restore your body, or you simply want to discuss your options with a specialist, do not hesitate to contact SurgeonGate. We are on a mission to make cosmetic surgery safer and more effective through education and personal guidance. Every day, we connect patients all over Michigan with experienced surgeons who are rigorously trained in the treatments they are searching for, changing minds and bodies for the better.
